Regional partnerships funding for defence and marine industry sectors

Funding of more than $70,900 under the Australian Government's Regional Partnerships means better job prospects in Cockburn, East Fremantle, Fremantle, Gosnells, Kwinana, Melville and Rockingham.

Announcing the funding today, Senator for Western Australia Ian Campbell said the funding would assist the South West Corridor Development and Employment Foundation (SWCDEF) with its South West Metro Industry Cluster Initiative.

The Regional Partnerships programme will create skilled jobs including metal trades, design and drafting, sheet metal, skilled engineering, marine consultants, marine architects, project management and transport.

"This Australian Government Regional Partnerships funding will assist with the cost of consultants to provide specialist training to cluster industry participants," Senator Campbell said.

"The project aims to create strong and competitive business environments through the establishment of business clusters.

"The programme works by bringing together related firms (clusters) and adopting a partnership approach to solving problems.

"The aim is to increase the number of high quality jobs in the south-west metropolitan region of Perth with a specific focus on the defence and marine industry sectors."

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Cobb MP, congratulated the local community in working together towards gaining access to Regional Partnerships funding.

"I would particularly like to thank the Perth Area Consultative Committee for helping to bring this project to fruition," Mr Cobb said.

"Communities should contact their local Area Consultative Committee if they wish to seek funding through Regional Partnerships."
