Australian Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Senator the Hon. Ian Campbell
22 December 2005
A young Japanese man at sea in the Southern Ocean will be granted access to an Australian port in order to receive emergency medical treatment.
The man is aboard a Japanese vessel participating in the Japanese Government’s whaling programme (JARPA II).
While the Australian Government does not support commercial whaling, it will always assist a person in the event of an emergency at sea.
The Australian Government’s opposition to commercial whaling is well known – but it will never put a human life at risk.
