BP Global Choice™ - 1 million tonnes fewer greenhouse gas emission

Australian Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell, today congratulated BP Australia’s BP Global Choice™ programme in achieving one million tonnes of greenhouse gas abatement.

BP Global Choice™ is an environmental programme that has been certified under the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Friendly™ programme.

“One million tonnes of greenhouse gas emission reductions is a significant and important milestone for BP,” Senator Campbell said.

“This achievement clearly demonstrates that businesses are able to make a positive contribution to the environment without compromising performance.

“It equates to removing more than 200,000 vehicles from the road,” he said.

Certified as Greenhouse Friendly™ since 2001, the BP Global Choice™ programme allows the company’s commercial customers to nominate some or all of their fuel purchase to be greenhouse neutral.

Emissions from fuel products are offset by approved greenhouse gas reduction projects such as switching to less greenhouse intensive fuels and capturing methane from landfills.

Each year these reduction programmes are independently audited to ensure that the activities have ‘balanced out’ emissions and comply with the Australian Government’s guidelines.

Senator Campbell said industry leaders like BP, who take the initiative to become involved in the Greenhouse Friendly™ programme, are proving that environmental wins are compatible with business profit.

He said doing business and being environmentally responsible were not mutually exclusive.

“Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of choosing an environmentally friendly alternative,” he said.

“Products and services that display the Greenhouse Friendly™ logo are a valuable point of difference in helping consumers to choose products that are better for the environment.

“Significant benefits can be achieved through Greenhouse Friendly™ certification, such as better environmental achievements, increased shareholder confidence and greater community goodwill.”
