Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Senator the Hon. Ian Campbell
14 February 2005
Australia's Indigenous communities will be assisted to protect and promote their unique heritage through a $3.3 million funding programme in 2005-2006, Minister for the Environment and Heritage Senator Ian Campbell said today.
The Indigenous Heritage Programme will provide indigenous communities with funding of up to $100,000 for projects to improve the protection, conservation and promotion of Indigenous cultural heritage values.
Announcing the funding, Senator Campbell said Indigenous organisations and individuals, local governments and not-for-profit organisations would be able to apply for the programme.
"I am confident that the programme will help share Australia's Indigenous stories. Projects funded under the Programme will include the promotion of Indigenous heritage through initiatives such as community-based tourism and interpretation projects," Senator Campbell said.
"The programme will also help ensure that Australia's most important Indigenous places are recognised in our new National Heritage List and given appropriate protection. The programme will support the identification and maintenance of Indigenous sites.
"I encourage eligible bodies that have significant heritage places in their areas to apply for funding," he said.
The Indigenous Heritage Programme is funded annually through the Australian Government's whole-of-Government approach to improving the delivery of services relating to Indigenous affairs.
Applications for funding close on 28 March 2005.
