Gallop must sign up to water deal

The decision by Victorian Premier Steve Bracks to sign up to the National Water Initiative is to be congratulated.

It is now time for WA Premier Geoff Gallop to follow Mr Bracks' lead and sign up.

Dr Gallop refused to sign up to the National Water Initiative when it was first announced last year.

Now that the election is over, Dr Gallop must ensure that Western Australians have access to the Howard Government's $2 billion fund for water projects.

Dr Gallop made an election promise of $29 million for the Harvey Water Project - $28 million of which he suggested would come from the Howard Government's Australian Water Fund.

He can't bid for projects under the Howard Government's $2 billion Australian Water Fund unless he signs up to the National Water Initiative.

He has a responsibility to ensure that Western Australia can deliver practical, on-ground water solutions.
