Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Senator the Hon. Ian Campbell
22 September 2004
The Australian Government - the Cabinet, the Prime Minister, the Environment Minister and the Science Minister - have always supported grazing of cattle and the highland cattlemen in alpine regions.
Nothing has changed.
The Howard Government has supported this position for eight years and will continue to do so.
Our mountain cattlemen are great Australians and are an important part of Australia's heritage.
As custodians of the alpine lands, they care deeply and passionately for their environment and the only people who have ever threatened their access to these areas have been Victorian Labor Governments - first under Joan Kirner and now under Steve Bracks.
The chair of the Victorian Labor Taskforce on alpine grazing this morning said they had no policy on the issue.
The Federal Coalition Government's position is clear - we support it. I call on the Victorian Labor Government to make its intentions known.
