Labor puts Great Barrier Reef in limbo

An official Latham Labor press release from the endorsed Labor candidate from Hinkler raises serious questions about Labor's position on the Great Barrier Reef regional assessment plan.

In the statement on Friday, the ALP attacked the plan and committed to an inquiry.

This not only puts a question mark over the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park environmental protection systems, but throws into doubt and confusion the structural adjustment plan designed to assist the fishing industry.

I am committed to providing fair and equitable treatment to the commercial land recreational fishing sectors and the businesses that support them. I am also committed to protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

The Labor Party is threatening the reef and undermining the assistance package that we are working on very constructively with the fishing industry.

Mr Latham and his spokesmen need to end the confusion and state their policy on the reef. Will they stand by the reef protection plan or will they reopen the plan and redraw the boundaries?

The people of Queensland need an answer to this latest example of Labor's policy on the run.
