Minister for the Environment and Heritage
The Hon. Dr David Kemp
31 May 2003
Minister for Environment and Heritage congratulated the developers of the innovative Your Home Consumer Guide and Technical Manual - a guide to good home design and building - who today won national recognition for environmental communication excellence at the 2003 Banksia Awards at the Gold Coast.
"Your Home is an outstanding example of government and industry working in partnership and I congratulate both the Commonwealth's Australian Greenhouse Office and the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology in Sydney for their well deserved win," Dr Kemp said.
Dr Kemp said Your Home - released two years ago - was the first publication to deliver practical and comprehensive information about environmentally sustainable design and building to both homeowners and the building industry.
"Your Home demonstrates how the latest environmental solutions can be applied to conventional homes, providing homeowners with stylish, comfortable homes and leading to big savings in energy costs."
Tips featured in Your Home include:
The Your Home package consists of a 32-page, easy to use guide for consumers and a 300 page technical manual for building industry professionals. The free consumer guide also contains a CD-Rom of the technical manual, including practical case studies and "how-to" guides for homeowners.
The Federal Government developed the Your Home materials in collaboration with peak building industry and corporate partners. The Institute of Sustainable Futures was a key developer of the materials.
"Australian households contribute to almost 20% of Australia's greenhouse gases, much of which comes from energy used in the home. Your Home is one of a range of Commonwealth initiatives improving the environmental performance of buildings and cutting Australia's greenhouse gas emissions," Dr Kemp said.
