Federal Minister for the Environment and Heritage
The Hon. Dr David Kemp
24 November 2003
Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Dr David Kemp, today presented achievement awards to over 40 local councils that have achieved significant milestones as part of the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia program, which is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Speaking at the Australian Local Government Association National Assembly in Canberra this morning, Dr Kemp also announced $1 million funding over five years for a Water Campaign based on the successful CCP Australia approach.
"CCP is not only the world's largest local government greenhouse gas abatement initiative but CCP Australia also has the fastest uptake and largest number of participating local governments of any country in the world, with over 180 CCP councils - representing over 75 per cent of Australia's population - actively working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Dr Kemp said.
"Local governments play a key role in Australia's greenhouse gas abatement strategy. They have the capacity to influence almost 50 per cent of Australia's total greenhouse gas emissions not only by implementing direct actions to limit emissions and promote sustainability, but also educating businesses, industries and households in their areas.
"The success of CCP Australia in galvanising local government action and achieving greenhouse gas reduction is world class - saving 740,714 tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2002-2003.
"The Howard Government is providing national leadership in achieving proper management of our scarce water resources and I am delighted that alongside the highly successful CCP program for greenhouse action, we will have in place a parallel program for water. We will work with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and local governments to deliver natural resource management practices and enhanced water efficiency measures.
"The Water Campaign, which brings together all aspects of water management, is an opportunity for local governments to show their communities how to best manage their water resources in a coordinated way."
The Howard Government has funded Cities for Climate Protection Australia, through ICLEI, with $15.7 million over six years to help local governments and their communities reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
