Minister for Environment and Heritage, Dr David Kemp, today requested the House of Representatives Committee on Environment and Heritage to inquire into the future sustainability of Australia's urban areas.
"There is no question that our urban environments are one of our greatest sustainability challenges and I have asked the Committee, chaired by the Member for Dunkley, Mr Bruce Billson MP, to conduct the Sustainable Cities 2025 Inquiry," Dr Kemp said.
The Inquiry will look at issues and policies relating to:
"Integrating the built and natural environment in a sustainable manner requires planning and a clearly articulated strategy. Identifying the issues and articulating a forward strategy for the nation is the target of this inquiry," Mr Billson said.
Mr Billson has asked that submissions to the Inquiry be submitted by 31 October 2003.
