Federal Minister for the Environment and Heritage
The Hon Dr David Kemp, MP
08 February 2002
The Federal Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Dr David Kemp will put forward a regulation banning trawling on inshore areas off Mission Beach.
Dr Kemp said the decision followed repeated and significant cases of dead fish from trawler bycatch washing onto local beaches and into waters used heavily for recreation and tourism.
"Mission Beach is in a major tourism region and people do not expect to see dead fish lining the beach for up to ten kilometres, or large slicks of dead fish close inshore."
"The trawling industry needs to make a significant effort in relation to bycatch", Dr Kemp said.
