Funding Helps Melbourne Community Networks Protect Their Local Environment

The Federal Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Dr David Kemp and coordinator of the Friends of Balcombe Park, Joan Couzoff, today congratulated 57 Melbourne community groups for securing funding from the Commonwealth Government's Natural Heritage Trust to protect their local environment.

Dr Kemp said native vegetation and community groups in the Melbourne area would be the big winners through the grants under the Urban Bushcare project coordinated by Greening Australia Victoria in collaboration with the Port Phillip Catchment and Land Protection Board.

"The hugely successful Urban Bushcare project has been running since 1999 and supports community groups and land managers to revegetate and enhance existing bushland throughout Greater Melbourne," Dr Kemp said.

"Urban Bushcare received $656,000 through the Natural Heritage Trust for the first two years and was successful in securing a further $311,900 for 2002.

"The project draws volunteer groups, schools, businesses and service groups together under the one banner, but the groups receive individual grants from Urban Bushcare funds, ranging from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars.

"In this stage of the project, grants have been awarded to 57 groups to undertake on-ground works at 67 sites throughout the Melbourne metropolitan area. The funding from the Natural Heritage Trust enables groups to purchase local native plants and materials such as stakes, tree guards and fencing materials, and to pay for site preparation," Dr. Kemp said.

The President of Greening Australia Victoria, Rob Gell, said "The success of the Urban Bushcare Program demonstrates the groundswell of our community involvement in our public reserves system. This program has enabled a strategic approach across metropolitan Melbourne. These groups are now a formidable network no longer working in isolation."

Coordinator of the Friends of Balcombe Park, Joan Couzoff, who hosted the launch of this stage of the Program, praised the focus of Urban Bushcare as being very practical and giving the group a tangible sense of working within a broader network. "Balcombe Park is something our members take pride in personally. It's one of a very few examples of remnant heath in the area. Rare plants which are unique to this place have been discovered since regeneration burning in 2001." The Friends of Balcombe Park meet at 10am on the last Sunday of each month for working bees.

See below for details on the Melbourne groups that have received funding in the third year of the Urban Bushcare project. We also have Dr Kemp's speech notes for the announcement.
