12 August 2001
Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill announced today that agreement had been reached between the Commonwealth and the trawl fishing industry over the Queensland trawl management plan.
Senator Hill said agreement was reached between the Commonwealth and the trawl industry over changes to the plan in relation to the cap in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area:
"Provided the Queensland Government implements these changes the fishing management plan will be accredited," Senator Hill said.
"I will request the Queensland Government to do this as soon as possible.
"This agreement will ensure that the cap level previously agreed is effectively implemented within the plan.
