Federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke, today announced the appointment of Margie McKenzie as a member of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Mr Burke said Ms McKenzie has a great deal of experience relevant to the tourism position and will bring a deep understanding of the tourism industry to her new role at the Authority.

"The Great Barrier Reef is an amazing natural treasure and GBRMPA do a great job managing this important asset," Mr Burke said.

"As a key user of the Marine Park, the tourism industry is an important partner in its protection and management and tourism operators play an important role in protecting the amazing biodiversity that supports their industry.

"The tourism industry provides the most personal way that the people of the world connect with the magnificent Great Barrier Reef.

Ms McKenzie is currently the managing director of a marine tourism consulting company in Cairns and was previously a partner in Deep Sea Diver's Den, one of the first dive businesses to be established in the area.

Ms McKenzie is also the General Manager of Dive Queensland, a non-profit association committed to promoting and developing the diving industry in Queensland.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is the principal adviser to the Australian Government on the care, development and management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Ms McKenzie has been appointed for a five-year term and joins Dr Russell Reichelt, Melissa George, Tony Mooney and Jon Grayson as members of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
