Nominations for the Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year and Young Environmentalist of the Year awards open today.

The awards recognise those unsung heroes in our community who have made an outstanding contribution in protecting our environment and creating a sustainable future for Australia.

Environment Minister, Tony Burke, today encouraged any individuals, groups or organisations who have been working to protect our environment to nominate for either the Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year or Young Environmentalist of the Year awards.

“Volunteers and community groups do a huge amount of work in conserving our environment and creating a more sustainable Australia,” Mr Burke said.

“These awards recognise those incredible people who give up their time to contribute to our environment.

“I encourage anyone who knows people who go over and above to protect our environment to nominate them.”

Nominations are now open for the following awards:

  • The Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year award: open to any Australian individual, group or organisation for a project undertaken within Australia, which has made a significant contribution towards the environment.
  • The Young Environmentalist of the Year Award: open to any Australian individual under the age of 25 for a project undertaken within Australia which has made a significant contribution towards the environment.

Nominations close on 22 April 2013 and the awards will be announced as part of World Environment Day celebrations in June 2013.
