30 November 2012
Water Minister Tony Burke today announced that David Papps has been appointed as the new Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder.
Mr Papps, who is currently employed as the Director-General of the ACT Environmental and Sustainable Development Directorate will start in the role before Christmas.
“Mr Papps has had a long history working in natural resource management, sustainability and biodiversity conservation and I’m pleased he will take up this important role,” Mr Burke said.
“As the CEWH he will head an office charged with the responsibility of rejuvenating wetlands and rivers in the Murray-Darling Basin following the release of the final Basin Plan which is set to recover and return water to enhance the resilience of environmental assets such as the Lower Lakes and Coorong, Macquarie Marshes, Hattah Lakes, and Yanga National Park.
“The use of environmental water and the decisions taken by the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder are at the heart of basin reform.
“This is the way we restore the system to health.
“I’m looking to Mr Papps to bring a fresh perspective to this position.”
Mr Papps has had a long and successful career both in the public and private sectors including senior executive positions across three jurisdictions.
Mr Papps has previously held the position of Chief Executive ACT Department of Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water, as well as senior positions in the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment, the NSW Department of Land and Water Conservation, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Mr Papps has also worked for Macquarie Bank on a community partnerships business involved with local, State and Federal Governments, and sustainability initiatives including an indigenous development fund to support social and economic aspirations.
