New National Housing Supply Council Appointments

Media release
12 May 2011

Minister for Sustainability, Population and Communities, Tony Burke, today announced the new membership of the National Housing Supply Council to support housing affordability by providing essential information and analysis on housing supply across Australia.

The National Housing Supply Council was established by the Government in 2008 as an independent body to provide forecasts, analysis and advice on land supply and construction activity to meet housing demand and improve affordability over a 20 year forecast period.

"Access to affordable housing is a challenge for many Australians; we need to make sure we get the supply to match the needs of our changing population," Mr Burke said

"The Gillard Government recognises that long-term housing policy and investment decisions need to be guided by robust, independent information on the state of housing supply in Australia.

"This important information helps all levels of government, developers, investors and communities to understand and plan for future housing needs in their states, territories, cities and regions."

The State of Supply Report has become a resource for governments and industry as it provides independent and consistent data on housing supply and affordability, housing demand and the supply-demand gap.

The new Council, which includes a mix of new and previous members, will meet for the first time in June 2011. Its immediate priority will be to develop and deliver the third State of Supply Report.

Members were selected and appointed for their individual capacity and their diverse expertise in areas relevant to the housing industry, including the housing, building and construction industry, planning and development, banking and finance sectors and housing research.

"I'd like to thank those members leaving the Council for their contribution and look forward to working with the new Council to deliver on this important agenda," Mr Burke said.

"Affordable housing is an important part of building a sustainable Australia, the Council highlights pressures in the housing market so we can better address them."
