Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities
Get involved in Clean Up Australia Day
4 March 2011
Federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke, today encouraged Australians across the country to join in the 21st annual Clean Up Australia Day.
Clean Up Australia Day is being held on Sunday, 6 March.
Mr Burke said that Clean Up Australia Day was a great example of the community coming together to improve our environment.
"Clean Up Australia Day is a great opportunity to get together with family and friends and help keep our communities beautiful," Mr Burke said.
"I'll be helping to clean up down at the Cooks River and I encourage people to find out what is happening in their local communities and get involved.
"Every year thousands of people give up part of their weekend to be part of this event and contribute to their community.
"This is also an opportunity to reflect on how we can cut the amount of waste, improve recycling and re-use our waste."
Last year more than 588,000 registered volunteers across Australia helped out at 7,073 Clean Up Sites.
This year there are expected to be even more volunteers with up to 7075 sites registered.
