Abstract:
This key layer is the index to the input datasets collated into the extant (present) vegetation theme of the NVIS Version 4.1 dataset, from which the Major Vegetation Group and Subgroup products have been derived.

The layer is intended to document and describe the input datasets and assist in dynamic analyses of data quality and gaps in the NVIS extant theme dataset. Important information in the spatial feature class includes the dataset spatial extent (i.e. its "footprint") and dataset number and the state of origin of the underlying dataset. Where more than one dataset have been combined within a footprint, the polygons from each data source are represented separately (particularly in NSW and NT); however, "veg clearing" datasets have not been included directly, to keep the number of polygons manageable. See the real NVIS vector or raster data for such data.

Important information in the associated lookup table (NVIS4_1_LUT_KEY_DSETn, where n is an incremental number for minor updates) joined via DATA_SET_NUMBER includes data source (e.g. State and Territory NVIS or gap-fill), dataset name, publication scale and the on-ground range of dates of the vegetation survey.

Limitations of use:
Suitable for understanding and mapping various NVIS data source and quality attributes.

Applications involving futher use of the data may need to resolve the minor, but numerous, sliver and overlap issues.

Lineage:
Spatial data
------------------
Where possible, dataset footprints provided by the custodian were used as source material.

Alternatively, NVIS v4.1 source data provided by state/territory data custodians were dissolved on DATASET_NUMBER in ArcGIS versions 9.3 and 10 to produce relatively simple footprints.

Non-native and/or non-vegetation polygons were not always provided by custodians, so the outer boundaries of some datasets were derived from the version 3.1 key layer, creation of additional external features using ArcGIS topology editing or where they coincided with the coast or a state border, using the AUSLIG Australian State Borders (1:100000) or Coastlines Datasets.

Spatial data amalgamation
----------------------------------------
In some cases, not all of the source dataset was used, so the relevant footprints were clipped to the dataset extents actually used in NVIS v4.1.

Footprints for each state were created by a series of delete and append operations with new footprints, using the NVIS Version 3.1 key layer as the initial target. Geometry and topology checks were performed on each state compilation and many obvious slivers deleted (although many remain!) in edit mode.

Statewide footprints were appended together. Geometry was checked and repaired. Then topology was checked for "no overlaps" and problems (mostly along state borders) resolved by editing in ArcGIS, sometimes using the AUSLIG State borders (1:100,000) data to resolve conflicts. Some minor overlaps remain, such as along the NSW/QLD border.

Some data gaps in this dataset will occur where gaps exist in the actual data, while others may have been filled for various cartographic or operational reasons.

Attribute Data
--------------------
The spatial operations, above, were performed with minimal attribution.

Temporary lookup tables were created from the NVIS DATA_SET and VERSION_USAGE Oracle tables and the spatial data checked to ensure all polygons had a valid lookup value (via DATA_SET_NUMBER).

Overall
-----------
On-screen data quality checking and validation was undertaken.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy:
The positional accuracy corresponds to the positional accuracy of each input data set. Accuracy is variable depending on the scale and source of the input data, which ranges between 1:4,000 and 1:5,000,000.
This feature class would have a similar range of inputs and should thus be used at scales circa 1:250000 or coarser. Use at finer scales may be unreliable.

Data quality report - Attribute accuracy:
Attributes
STATE: state of origin of the dataset
DATASET_NUMBER: A number assigned by the ERIN Vegetation Team to the underlying dataset. This links to an associated lookup table (NVIS4_1_LUT_KEY_DSETn, where n is an incremental number for minor updates) with other key attributes (see separate metadata for details).

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency:
The dataset is consistent for attributes relating to the the dataset in each footprint.

Applications involving futher use of the data may need to resolve the minor, but numerous, sliver and overlap issues.

Data quality report - Completeness:
This dataset depicts the actual footprints of all source datasets used in NVIS Version 4.1.

In some instances, the source data compiled does not yet meet the target criteria specified for NVIS Version 1:100K or better in the Intensive Landuse Zone and 1:250 K or better in the Extensive Landuse Zone.

Attributes are complete. However, spatial and attribute data on small islands may be absent or highly unreliable.

Vegetation data with NVIS descriptions do not provide a complete coverage of vegetation for all of Australia and some significant gaps remain, particularly in NSW and SA.
