Management Arrangements for activities in the Macquarie Island Commonwealth Marine Reserve

The following table outlines activities allowed with a permit, without the need of a permit, and those activities not allowed in Macquarie Island Marine Park.

A - Individual approval from the Director of National Parks is required. Each application will be assessed on a case by case basis. Scientific Research activities may also be allowed in accordance with a Permit issued by the Director of National Parks. Contact the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts for more information.
G - Allowed in zone under general approval from the Director of National Parks. No application or registration is required.

  1. These are defined as: activities within the Reserve, not undertaken for a commercial purpose, that do not:
    • result in the death, injury, taking, trade, keeping or moving of a member of a native species;
    • result in damage to the heritage of the Reserve;
    • involve erecting a building or structure, carrying on an excavation or carrying out works; or
    • involve mining operations as defined by subsection 355(2) of the EPBC Act
  2. These are defined as: activities undertaken for a commercial purpose but not involving commercial fishing, commercial tourism or transit in a commercial vessel
