About ESCAVI
The Executive Steering Committee for Australian Vegetation Information (ESCAVI) brings together the Australian Government and all states and territories to improve Australia's vegetation information as an input to better vegetation management.
ESCAVI sponsors this website under the auspices of the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
Role
ESCAVI's role is to:
- provide a forum for national coordination and leadership for the development, maintenance and use of vegetation data and information products
- facilitate development of a comprehensive and accessible information system for vegetation, including concepts, guidelines and standards
- facilitate development of vegetation data and information products to better inform decision making
- communicate and promote ESCAVI activities and achievements to assist sustainable natural resource management

A key aspect of ESCAVI's role is to steer the ongoing development of the NVIS.
ESCAVI was established in November 2001 after completion of the Australian Native Vegetation Assessment 2001 by the first National Land and Water Resources Audit.
Membership
ESCAVI's membership includes:
- Department of the Environment, Heritage, Water and the Arts (1)
- Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (1)
- National Land and Water Resources Audit (1)
- the nominated lead agency responsible for vegetation management in each of the states and territories (limit of 8, if possible)
Participants are also invited from:
- Australian Greenhouse Office
- ANZLIC
- Bureau of Rural Statistics or other DAFF
- CSIRO
- Environmental Resources Information Network ERIN or other DEWHA
- National Forest Inventory Steering Committee
- Representatives of regional natural resource management or planning groups in different states
- Other national coordination committees
- National Farmers' Federation
- A local government representative
- Conservation organisation representative(s)
