About the report
The Saltshaker Project led by Greening Australia ACT and SE NSW was a $1.8 million Bushcare enhancement project in the Boorowa Catchment of central NSW. The catchment has been extensively cleared with about 8% of the catchment remaining under woodland or forest cover. Numerous outbreaks of dryland salinity are a symptom of overclearing and agricultural intensification on a broadscale.
The potential biodiversity benefits of Saltshaker have been assessed using a framework developed by CSIRO through the support of Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH) (Freudenberger and Harvey 2003). The assessment of Saltshaker was possible through the investment by Greening Australia of $15,000 of Project funds for mapping all on-ground work supported by the Project.
