Tasmanian Forests Intergovernmental Agreement Independent Verification Process

Interim Reserve Boundaries

The Australian and Tasmanian governments signed the Tasmanian Forests Intergovernmental Agreement on 7 August 2011. Clause 25 of that Agreement requires the State to place 430,000 hectares of native forest into Informal Reserves, from the 572,000 hectares nominated by environment non government organisations through the Statement of Principles process.

The boundaries of that 430,000 hectares were verified through an independent verification process. The advice tabled in the Senate outlines the independent verification process undertaken by Professor Jonathan West.

Terms of Reference for the independent verification of guaranteed wood supply and high conservation value forests under the Tasmanian Forests Intergovernmental Agreement

On Friday 19 August the Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings released the Terms of Reference for the independent verification of guaranteed wood supply and high conservation value forests under the Tasmanian Forests Intergovernmental Agreement.

The Terms of Reference, which were endorsed by all Signatories to the Tasmanian Forests Statement of Principles process, are a key next step in progressing the joint objectives of environmental protection and support for a strong and viable forest industry.

Professor Jonathan West has been appointed to lead the Independent Verification Group, in recognition of his extensive knowledge and understanding of Tasmanian industry as the head of the Australian Innovation Research Centre.
