About the publication
On 26 October 2004 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) and the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH) regarding the delivery of integrated land management services to Indigenous Australians.
This agreement provides for a closer working relationship between the agencies, and offers opportunities for partnerships on a variety of projects.
The Memorandum of Understanding supports the ILC's role in assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to acquire and manage land in a way that provides cultural, social, environmental and economic benefits. Under the agreement the ILC and DEH will meet regularly to review existing land management activities, work on strategies to improve services and develop new projects.
The Memorandum of Understanding is consistent with the whole-of-government initiative to improve overall Indigenous service delivery. Departments have adopted this approach under the banner of the Council of Australian Governments (CoAG).
