Indigenous Protected Areas Advisory Group
The Indigenous Protected Areas Advisory Group (IPAAG) provides advice to the Australian Government on the development of the Indigenous Protected Areas program. The Advisory Group consists of Indigenous people who are experts in their fields and are committed to promoting Indigenous involvement biodiversity conservation.
The Advisory Group also includes representatives from the Indigenous Land Corporation and stakeholders such as WWF-Australia and government nature conservation agencies.
Advisory Group Terms of Reference
The Advisory Group meets at least once a year to provide policy advice on development of the Indigenous Protected Areas program to the Australian Minister for the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, and his Department.
The Advisory Group will:
- Seek to reflect the views of all stakeholders - including State and Territory conservation agencies, non-government organisations and Indigenous groups from across Australia - in the development of the Indigenous Protected Areas program
- Encourage the development of complementary processes in each State and Territory
- Advise on the implementation of the Indigenous Protected Areas program, including broader Indigenous conservation issues
- Seek to identify and promote national best-practice examples of Indigenous-owned and managed protected areas, and cooperative management of protected areas by Indigenous groups and government agencies
- Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of the Indigenous Protected Areas program
- Recommend options for the development of Indigenous Protected Areas
- Review Indigenous Protected Areas guidelines.
