Ningaloo Coast
The Australian Government, with the support of the Government of Western Australia, is preparing a nomination for the Ningaloo Coast to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) and the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) are providing information to the Australian community and seeking their input to the nomination. Regular updates will be posted on our about Australia's World Heritage page and DECs web site .
The land and waters of the Ningaloo Coast are special. The waters contain one of the best developed near-shore reefs in the world, a continuous series of more than 200 kilometres of spectacular wave-swept ramparts off a rugged limestone peninsula. The Cape Range peninsula karst system is an evolutionary laboratory built from the skeletons of ancient sea creatures which gradually emerged from under the sea, and houses remarkable subterranean fauna. The site tells unparalleled stories across time, latitude and species, about the movement of continents, changing climates and the evolution of life over 150 million years.
