- manages natural and cultural heritage across the state's land and waters
- acts to minimise the impacts of climate change
- conducts biodiversity, plant, environmental and cultural heritage research to improve decision making.

Department of Planning, Heritage Branch
The NSW Heritage Branch has been integrated into the NSW Department of Planning. Consideration of heritage matters are now part of the Department's core activities. For example, some former Heritage Branch staff will be integrated into the Department's development assessment, plan-making, strategic planning and policy teams.

Heritage Council of NSW
The Heritage Council of NSW is an advisory body that includes members of the community, the government, the conservation profession and representatives of organisations such as the National Trust of Australia (NSW).

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is part of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water, and works with people and communities to protect and conserve natural and cultural heritage, through an integrated system of ecologically sustainable landscape management. The state's network of protected areas is the centrepiece of this system.

Historic Houses Trust of NSW
The Historic Houses Trust (HHT) manages 14 diverse sites and properties including houses, public buildings, a farm, gardens, parklands, a beach and urban spaces. The HHT holds extensive collections in each of its properties and conducts a dynamic range of programs and activities attracting over two million visitors to its houses and museums each year.

Department of Aboriginal Affairs
The Department of Aboriginal Affairs (DAA) works with Aboriginal people, government agencies, and the private and community sectors to promote the interests of Aboriginal people in NSW and reduce inequity. DAA is also responsible for developing policy on land, water and cultural heritage issues

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) is the peak umbrella organisation for over 120 conservation and environment groups in New South Wales, Australia.
