Heritage Minister's working group inaugural meeting
The first meeting of the Heritage Minister's working group was held in Sydney on 16 February 2009.
This expert advisory group has been established by the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts to assist in improving the protection, conservation, promotion and awareness of Australia' unique heritage.
The group will help to identify ways to build greater community awareness of the value of heritage and advise the Minister on strategies to increase the economic and social benefits of heritage, particularly through tourism.
The Heritage working group is made up of individuals with a range of knowledge and experience in historic, natural and Indigenous heritage, tourism and economics.
The eight members of the group are: Mr Tom Harley, Australian Heritage Council; Dr Gaye Sculthorpe, National Native Title Tribunal; Associate Professor Peter Valentine, James Cook University; Ms Kristal Buckley, International Council on Monuments and Sites; Dr Graeme Blackman, National Trust; Professor David Throsby, Macquarie University; Associate Professor Don Garden, Federation of Australian Historical Societies; and Mr Chris Brown, Tourism and Transport Forum Australia.
The group will advise on potential strategic partnerships to maximise awareness of Australia's unique heritage assets and to increase private and public investment in conserving these assets for current and future generations.
They will also provide advice on the best way to use the heritage component of the economic stimulus package to achieve optimum long term heritage and economic outcomes for Australia.
