About the discussion paper
The Australian Government is seeking feedback on proposals for more effective laws to protect Indigenous traditional areas and objects across Australia. This discussion paper explains the government's proposals, which are now open for public comment. The paper contains 15 proposed reforms to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984. The Act could be substantially amended or replaced.
An outline of the proposed reforms appears on page 7 of the discussion paper.
Details of the government's proposals are set out on pages 10 to 49 of the paper.
Written submissions on the proposed reforms are due by 6 November 2009.
