The Australian Heritage Council is encouraging communities to register events online that celebrate their unique heritage for Australian Heritage Week to be held in April this year.
Chair of the Australian Heritage Council, Professor Carmen Lawrence, said the Australian Government is hoping to build on the success of Australian Heritage Week last year where more than 300 events were held across Australia.
“This annual celebration provides an opportunity for communities to showcase their unique heritage to the rest of the country,” Professor Lawrence said.
“Events could include open houses, guided walking tours, film screenings, dances, fetes, information sessions and exhibitions.
“Australian Heritage Week is also a special time to recognise the efforts of individuals, communities and volunteers who work tirelessly to protect and conserve Australia’s unique heritage.”
Events can be registered on the new Australian Heritage Week website where event managers can upload all the details about their special event and include a photo.
The new website will also make it easier for visitors to find events near them, with an interactive map function and the ability to search for events by state, region or type of event.
“The Council encourages local, state and national heritage organisations, historical societies and heritage place owners to register events that celebrate and honour Australia’s heritage during Australian Heritage Week,” Professor Lawrence said.
Australian Heritage Week 2012 will be held from Saturday 14 April to Sunday 22 April.
