BHP Billiton Port Hedland outer harbour development project is being assessed under national environment law because of its potential impacts on nationally threatened species, listed migratory species and the Commonwealth marine area.
Where is it up to?
The final environmental impact statement was received by the department on 11 January 2012.
When will a decision be made?
The minister has until 9 March 2012 to make a final decision on whether or not the project can go ahead under national environment law.
