Sustainability, biodiversity conservation and enhancement of school grounds are priorities for Bulimba State School. With support from the whole school community, students are actively involved in improving the natural bush setting of the school grounds, and have created a designated outdoor learning area which is the context for play based and enquiry based learning.
For example, Preparatory classes make bird baths and animal houses to attract native wildlife. Year 2 classes plant and harvest vegetables, and Year 3 classes study endangered animals, including resident frilled neck lizards. Regular environmental camps are also held to raise environmental awareness. Year 4 revegetates local bush land, studies photosynthesis and learns about the habitat of sugar gliders. Year 5 visits a local creek to witness human impacts on the environment first hand.
Teachers come together regularly to plan and map the curriculum across a set of essential learnings, focusing on embedding sustainability into subject areas and incorporating practical projects into units of work.
