About the application
The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities has received an application for a permit under Part 13, section 237 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
The application is for a permit to document underwater behaviour, identify individuals and sex of calves to assess populations and understand behaviour and interaction of Southern Right Whales. The proposed five year study will look at capturing data that may contribute to determining increase or decrease in numbers, identify individuals and creating a database or contributing to existing databases of information about the Australian population and their behaviour in these regions. The primary data would be behaviour documentation, identification of individuals and recording sound and vocalisations.
In accordance with the provisions of section 237(3b) of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal before COB 14 November 2011.
