The report contributes to the objective of the Threat abatement plan for the impacts of marine debris on vertebrate marine life to improve our understanding of the sources and distribution of marine debris at a national scale. The project identified available information on marine debris and developed a preliminary analysis of its sources and distribution at a national scale.

The report recommended further work including data analysis, modelling, species impact assessment and the development of a national marine debris database. This work is being undertaken through the TeachWild program, which is a national three-year marine debris research and education program developed by Earthwatch Australia in partnership with CSIRO and Shell Australia to gather data on marine debris and its impacts on Australian wildlife.
