About the Plan

The Solitary Islands Marine Reserve (Commonwealth Waters) (SIMR) is located in the Coffs Harbour region of the New South Wales mid-north coast. The Reserve adjoins the seaward boundary of the NSW Solitary Islands Marine Park (SIMP) and extends to the 50 metre depth contour. The SIMP (NSW Waters) is 710 square kilometres in area with the SIMR (Commonwealth Waters) covering a further 160 square kilometres (total 870 square kilometres).

The SIMR is of great conservation significance as it contains a relatively undisturbed, distinct and species-rich ecosystem associated with open ocean, subtidal reef, and soft substrate habitats.

The SIMR Management Plan expires on 3 April 2008. A review of the plan will be carried out concurrently with the NSW review of zoning for the Solitary Islands Marine Park (NSW). The community and relevant groups will be consulted in the review of the SIMP Management Plan.

From 4 April 2008 the SIMR will be managed under interim management arrangements until a new Plan comes into operation.
