IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MARINE USERS

Transitional arrangements for renamed marine reserves
From the declaration of Commonwealth marine reserves in November 2012 until new management plans come into effect in July 2014, there will be no changes to management arrangements for the renamed Commonwealth marine reserves that existed prior to the establishment of the new reserves. This includes Marine National Nature Reserves and Marine Parks, whether they continue to exist as discrete reserves or have been incorporated into larger new reserves.

About this document

Interim management arrangements for Mermaid commenced on 17 May 2007.

This document describes the management arrangements at the Mermaid Reef Marine National Nature Reserve (Mermaid) and provides advice on how visitors, and other users of Mermaid, should meet their obligations under Mermaid’s management arrangements. Visitors to Mermaid will require authorisation from the Director of National Parks for certain activities. The arrangements arise from the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and its regulations and are consistent with the first management plan for Mermaid which formally expired on 16 May 2007.

The arrangements outlined in this document will remain in place until the development of a new management plan at the conclusion of the marine bioregional planning process for the north west region. Stakeholders will be consulted in the development of the new management plan.
