Minister's Award for Coastal Custodians
The 2007 Award has been presented to Kangaroo Island Dolphin Watch in association with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society of Australasia for their ongoing commitment to protect and conserve the coastal and marine environment around Kangaroo Island. In particular their work in monitoring dolphin populations has been recognised with this Award.
The Minister's Award for Coastal Custodians encourages community custodianship of Australia's coastal and marine environments, fostering cooperative partnerships between individuals, organisations, schools, business and industry. Through these partnerships, Australians are working together to preserve the health, integrity and diversity of their coasts and oceans.
Eligibility criteria
The award was open to Australian individuals and organisations working to improve the coastal and/or marine environment. Nominations will be judged against the following criteria:
- the development of a practical solution to an identified marine or coastal environmental problem
- an example of innovation in marine or coastal environmental remediation
- an example of community or school-based awareness-raising about a marine or coastal environmental issue
- a pro-active approach to cultural or behavioural change relating to the improvement of the marine or coastal environment
- an example of marine or coastal environment monitoring leading to remediation action
- an example of cooperation between individuals, organisations, institutions, industries or businesses to improve the marine or coastal environment
The Award was presented by on behalf of the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, Peter Garrett by South Australian Senator Dana Wortley.
