National Carbon Offset Standard

Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, 2012

Version 2, released May 2012

About the document

The National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS) provides a benchmark for organisations in Australia voluntarily seeking to be carbon neutral for their operations, products, services and events.

The Standard:

  • sets minimum requirements for calculating, auditing and offsetting the carbon footprint of an organisation, product, service or event; and
  • provides guidance on what is a genuine voluntary carbon emissions offset.

The Australian Government introduced the NCOS on 1 July 2010. This document (Version 2) was released in May 2012.

Version 3 of the document will be released at the end of 2015. This revision will incorporate the outcomes from the 2014-15 Review of the National Carbon Offset Standard.
