Engaging our Pacific neighbours on climate change: Australia's approach
About the document
Australia values its close links with the island countries of the Pacific, and plays an active role in the region. We recognise that although Pacific island countries have contributed little to the causes of climate change, they are among the most vulnerable to its effects. Australia and the Pacific share a common interest in the enduring prosperity of the Pacific region and in ensuring that climate change does not undermine sustainable development gains.
This document consolidates the Australian Government's policy approach to working with Pacific island countries on climate change to 2015, establishing positions that will inform our future activities in the region.
The document articulates principles to guide actions on behalf of the Australian Government, based on the Pacific region’s stated priorities and Australia's capacity to assist. Our approach is based on documents through which the Pacific has already spelt out its climate change priorities, such as the Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Climate Change 2006-2015.
