Services and experience

Services provided:

Northern Indigenous Environmental Services Ltd (NIES) is a not-for-profit, Indigenous owned and managed company committed to facilitating participation of Indigenous people in carbon farming and their access to socio-economic benefits.

NIES works with the financial and operational support of the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA) and the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC). Both NAILSMA and the ILC have long experience in supporting Indigenous livelihoods in general and participation in the carbon economy in particular. The first Indigenous project approved under the CFI is located on an ILC-held property - Fish River Station (FRS). The same technical advice used to develop FRS is available through NIES.

Our core operating principle is to maximise returns to Indigenous Australians in a responsible and sustainable way. NIES supports Indigenous land managers with complex project start-up and accreditation processes, and assists them in overcoming other barriers to entry, including access to start-up capital.

Feasibility assessment

  1. Making sure that the proposed savanna burning project complies with the CFI Act, regulations and the methodology determination.
  2. The legal advice required to cover CFI requirements for landholder agreement to apply a savanna burning methodology and claim credits.
  3. A comprehensive study of the costs, benefits and risks of developing and implementing the project to establish the business case.

Business and Project Development

  1. Options on how most appropriately to manage the project and engage with the CFI. This will take account of project approvals such as Recognised Offset Entity (ROE), Australian National Registry of Emissions Units (ANREU) and Project Application/Project documentation.
  2. Support in undertaking the approved abatement project, submission of offset reports and application for credits.
  3. Marketing strategies to corporates to ensure the best price for the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCRU's)
