Latitude Forest Services is a small consulting firm that has been working with Indigenous landowners and organisations on CFI activities since 2010.

Latitude's Director, Dr Hilary Smith, has a Ph.D in community agroforestry, a Masters Degree in Law, a Bachelor of Arts in Biogeography and is a Registered Professional Forester. She has 16 years experience in forestry, forest management and carbon activities. Since 2011 Latitude has been engaged by the Indigenous Land Corporation to provide expert advice on, and assess specific projects under the CFI. We have undertaken several feasibility studies for forest-based CFI projects and have assisted the ILC in the highly successful Fish River Fire Project, the first Indigenous CFI savanna burning project.

Latitude also provides general advice to the ILC on the CFI, methodology development and other carbon opportunities. In 2012 Latitude, in partnership with the ILC, undertook an Extension and Outreach Case Study for DAFF to describe a 'permanent environmental plantings' case study (the Kooreelah Case Study). Working with the ILC and NAILSMA we have developed numerous process documents and templates designed to assist Indigenous landowners to participate in the CFI.

Latitude also works directly with Indigenous landowner groups. For example, since 2010 we have assisted Yinjtinnga Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) in examining the feasibility of forest management and savanna burning activities on their land. We also recently helped YAC successfully apply for funding under the ICFF capacity building program and we will be working with them to undertake a feasibility assessment for their land on Cape York and to develop their CFI capacity.

In 2011 Latitude was engaged by GHD to work on two Indigenous carbon case studies commissioned by SEWPaC (Umpila and Jabalbina case studies (see SEWPaC website).

Latitude, with ATOA Consulting, ALOKA Group and ECOSO developed a Strategy for Carbon on Cape York, for Balkanu.
