Supporting Indigenous Australians to participate in the CFI

The Indigenous Carbon Farming Fund will provide $22.3m over five years to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to participate in the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI).

The Fund will be ongoing, commencing from July 2012, and delivered in two streams:

Capacity Building and Business Support stream

The Capacity Building and Business Support stream ($17.1 million over five years) is delivered by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities for Indigenous organisations and individuals to access::

In the initial round of the Indigenous Carbon Farming Fund, $1.3m is available for Capacity Building and Business Support activities through two streams:

Category 1 - Feasibility and Assessment grants up to $50,000
Grants up to $50,000 are available to assist Indigenous organisations and individuals undertake feasibility assessments and develop carbon farming project ideas. Funding is available to:

Category 2 - Business and Project Development grants up to $300,000
Grants up to $300,000 are available to Indigenous organisations and individuals with an existing feasibility assessment or business plan to implement carbon farming businesses. Funding is available to:

Research and Development stream

A Research and Development stream ($5.2m over five years) will provide funding for research and reporting tools for CFI methodologies. This funding will be directed towards low-cost methodologies likely to have high Indigenous participation to help create real and lasting opportunities for Indigenous Australians. This stream will be delivered by the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

The CFI will enable Indigenous landholders and land managers to earn carbon credits by undertaking projects to reduce emissions or store carbon. Types of projects include early season savanna burning, reforestation and land management in a way that increases soil carbon.
