For the purposes of the EPBC Act, Pultenaea sp. Genowlan Point (NSW 417813) is treated in the narrow sense and is restricted to the Genowlan Mountain area south-east of Kandos, west of Sydney in New South Wales (TSSC 2005r). Weston and de Kok (2002 cited in Harden 2002) treated the taxa as a synonym of P. glabra, although this treatment is not included in the 2005 Australian Plant Census (CHAH 2005). Weston (cited in Harden 2002) believes that several of variants included under P. glabra are likely to warrant recognition at specific rank. The morphologically dissimilar population in the P. glabra complex at Olinda are not included in the definition of Pultenaea sp. Genowlan Point (NSW 417813) (TSSC 2005r).

The Genowlan Point Pultenaea is a small (0.5 m) shrub within the Fabaceae (pea) family. It has yellow and red flowers with a deep red keel petal. The flowers grow on into a leafy shoot. This species is associated with the Pultenaea glabra species complex, however, P. glabra differs from the Genowlan Point Pultenaea in that it is taller with a yellow-to-orange keel petal and flowers that terminate in a dormant bud (DECC 2005c).

Genowlan Point Pultenaea is known from a single, small (250 m²) population at Genowlan Point in the Capertee Valley, south of Mudgee in NSW. The population occurs on Crown Land (DECC 2005c).

The Genowlan Point Pultenaea occurs on well-drained stony soil near a cliff edge (DECC 2005c).

The species is likely to be fire-sensitive, with recruitment occurring from a persistent soil-stored seed bank following fire (DECC 2005c).

The current known threats to the Genowlan Point Pultanaea are (DECC 2005c):

  • habitat degradation due to disturbance from recreational use of off-road vehicles and other visitor pressures;
  • grazing by feral goats; and
  • extremely small population size and restricted distribution.

The NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC 2005c) recommends the following actions to aid in recovery of this species:

  • reduction of the abundance of feral goats;
  • introduction of measures to prevent habitat degradation related to unrestricted access to habitat; and
  • research on taxonomy, threats and site management.

The Threat Abatement Plan for Competition and Land Degradation by Feral Goats is a Commonwealth-approved plan aimed at reducing feral goat impacts on native wildlife.

The following table lists known and perceived threats to this species. Threats are based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) threat classification version 1.1.
