National Wildlife Corridors Plan

Diverse, connected and healthy landscapes that support and sustain biodiversity, communities and wellbeing

Nomination, assessment and declaration of National Wildlife Corridors

It is anticipated that a National Wildlife Corridors Committee will be appointed by the Environment Minister in 2013. The Committee will report to the Land Sector Carbon and Biodiversity Board and provide advice to the Minister on the implementation of the National Wildlife Corridors Plan.

The National Wildlife Corridors Plan will support the development of an enduring network of wildlife corridors. This network will be underpinned by the creation of national wildlife corridors, declared by the Minister for the Environment, to create major links in the Australian landscape to support our biodiversity and its adaptation to a changing climate.

Proposed steps in the nomination, assessment and declaration process

Step 1: Themes - a theme for National Wildlife Corridor nominations may be determined.

Step 2: Nominations - nominations will be invited.

Step 3: Assessment - nominations will be assessed against criteria.

Step 4: Declarations - the Minister may declare National Wildlife Corridors.

Step 5: Review and reporting - the declaration process will be reviewed periodically.

More details on this process will be made available in 2013 when the process is finalised.
