About the fact sheet
Malleefowl are an iconic, threatened bird belonging to the family Megapodiidae – the megapodes or mound builders.
The Malleefowl is a large, ground-dwelling bird. Mottled grey, brown, tan and black feathers provide them with excellent camouflage. Their white throat has a conspicuous vertical black streak and their underbelly is white or light brown. There are no easily discernible differences in appearance between males and females, although males are slightly larger than females.
