Summary

The northern bettong (Bettongia tropica) is listed as ‘Endangered’ under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992, the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, and the IUCN red list of threatened species. The species was previously considered a subspecies of the brush-tailed bettong or woylie (Bettongia penicillata), from which it is geographically isolated.

Several threats are affecting the survival of northern bettongs. The threats continue to impinge on the extant populations, compromising their persistence and limiting the likelihood of populations recovering to their former status. In order of perceived significance these are:
