About the recovery plan
The greater bilby Macrotis lagotis is listed as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
Bilbies are now mostly restricted to the drier and least fertile parts of their former range with the exception of populations in the north of the NT and WA. The overall objectives of this recovery plan are:
- To improve and at least maintain the national conservation status of the greater bilby (currently listed nationally as Vulnerable) over the duration of the plan.
- To achieve an accurate assessment of distribution (both extent of occurrence and area of occupancy), trends in occurrence, and successfully reduce the impacts of key threatening processes.
It builds on conservation actions that have already commenced including protection and management of bilby habitat, applied research on wild populations and their predators, reintroduction within the former range, and coordinated management of captive individuals.
