Finalised priority assessment lists
In order for a threatened species, ecological community or key threatening process to be included, or transferred from one category to another on the lists under the EPBC Act a specific statutory process needs to be followed. The process involves an annual public call for nominations and an assessment cycle that commences on 1 October each year. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC) considers applicable public nominations, assesses them against a set of criteria and prepares a proposed priority assessment list (PPAL) for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts to consider. The TSSC itself can also nominate species, ecological communities or key threatening processes for inclusion in the PPAL.
The PPAL is provided to the Minister within the statutory timeframe set out in the EPBC Act. The Minister has 20 business days to consider the PPAL and make his finalised priority assessment list (FPAL).
The FPAL must be published and the TSSC must seek public comment on the species, ecological communities and key threatening processes in the FPAL as part of its statutory assessment process.

Nominations that will be assessed in the assessment period commencing on 1 October 2009, and the date by which the assessments are to be completed, are set out in the finalised priority assessment lists below. Some assessments that commenced in the previous assessment period are also continuing. These species, ecological communities and key threatening processes are included on the finalised priority assessment list for the assessment periods commencing 1 October 2007 and 1 October 2008.
Extensions to FPAL timeframes - the assessment timeframes for three nominations have recently been extended: southern bluefin tuna, trawling in the SESSF key threatening process and contemporary fire regimes key threatening process. The Minister has extended his timeframe for making a decision on the introduced freshwater fish key threatening process nomination to 24 May 2010.
