Threatened species & ecological communities

Other assessments - Listing assessments under the EPBC Act

Non-finalised priority assessment list assessments

Non-FPAL Assessments involve assessment of state/territory endemic species for listing under the EPBC Act. State and territory governments maintain their own lists of threatened species and it is common for species to be listed as threatened in both the state/territory and Commonwealth. These lists, however, can be misaligned where species are listed in different categories, or not listed at both levels. To better align lists of threatened species, assessments for new listings or transfers to different threatened categories for state endemic species are undertaken in partnership with the relevant state or territory.

The conservation status of species and ecological communities may also be reviewed where additional information becomes available or taxonomic changes occur, requiring a reassessment for possible transfer to a different threatened category or for delisting.

There are no statutory timeframes for the completion of Non-FPAL assessments. Additional information on the items included on the Non-FPAL assessment list can be found by searching the Species Profile and Threats (SPRAT) database. Once an assessment has been completed the item will be removed from the Non-FPAL assessments list and further information on the outcome of the assessment and listing status can be found by searching the SPRAT database or on a list of items Removed from the EPBC Act threatened list.
