Achievements of the Biological Diversity Advisory Committee

Biodiversity Research Priorities

The Committee reported to the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) on research needed to underpin biodiversity conservation activity. ANZECC agreed to the public release of the report. The report was published in June 2001 as Biodiversity Conservation Research: Australia's Priorities. It can be obtained from the Community Information Unit of the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.

Natural Resource Management

The Committee provided advice to the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources on:

priority management actions to conserve biodiversity to incorporate into the National Objectives and Targets for Biodiversity Conservation 2001-2005. These were agreed by the Australian Government and five States and Territories at ANZECC in June 2001.
the performance of the Natural Heritage Trust to June 2001, with proposals for the next phase of this program.
outcomes and targets for biodiversity conservation within an integrated natural resource management framework. This work focussed on the condition of Australia's biodiversity, rather than on management actions. Once agreed, these national outcomes will be achieved through regional target setting and program delivery under the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality, the extension of the Natural Heritage Trust and other initiatives.

Local Government

The Committee provided advice to the Minister ways to promote biodiversity conservation to local government. Previous work has included the biodiversity conservation "toolkit" which is designed to provide practical support for local councils to implement the National Local Government Biodiversity Strategy. The Committee will contribute a range of biological diversity questions to assess the effectiveness of the toolkit in the 2004-05 local government survey.
